IV Sedation Dentistry

Feel More Relaxed at the Dentist

Feeling nervous about dental treatment is common. For some people, dental anxiety makes even booking an appointment difficult and can lead to putting off treatment for months or even years.

At Salisbury Dental Care, we offer several options to help make dental treatment feel calmer and more manageable.

From mild relaxation options through to IV sedation with a visiting anaesthetist, our team will discuss your concerns and help determine which option is most suitable for you.

IV Sedation Dentistry

IV sedation is an option for patients who feel particularly anxious about dental treatment or who are undergoing longer or more complex procedures.

Sedative medication is administered intravenously by a visiting anaesthetist. You remain conscious and continue breathing independently, but you are placed into a deeply relaxed, sleep-like drowsy state.

Many patients have little or no memory of their dental treatment afterwards.

IV sedation also allows your dentist to complete more treatment during one appointment, which is helpful when several procedures are required.

IV Sedation vs General Anaesthetic

IV sedation is different from a general anaesthetic.

Under a general anaesthetic, you are completely unconscious. With IV sedation, you remain responsive and continue breathing independently while feeling deeply relaxed and drowsy.

Your anaesthetist monitors you throughout your treatment and adjusts your sedation as required.

Options to Help You Relax

We understand every patient experiences dental anxiety differently. Depending on your needs and the treatment planned, we offer several options.

Penthrox

Penthrox, sometimes known as the “green whistle”, is inhaled through a small handheld device.

It acts quickly and helps reduce discomfort and anxiety during dental treatment. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your appointment.

Oral Sedation (Valium)

Oral sedation involves prescribed medication in tablet form taken before your dental appointment to help you feel drowsy and relaxed.

If oral sedation is planned, your dentist will provide specific instructions for your medication. You will need someone to accompany you and drive you home following treatment.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered by a visiting anaesthetist, and the procedure is treated similarly to a day procedure within a hospital.

Medication is delivered intravenously and takes effect quickly, leaving you deeply relaxed throughout your procedure. Many patients remember little or nothing about their treatment afterwards.

You will need a responsible adult to accompany you home and follow the post-sedation instructions provided by your clinical team.

Is IV Sedation Safe?

Your safety is our priority.

During IV sedation, your anaesthetist and clinical team monitor you throughout your procedure, including your breathing and other vital signs.

Before treatment, your medical history will be reviewed to determine whether IV sedation is appropriate for you. You will also receive instructions about preparing for your appointment and what to do following treatment.
